As the car drives down Broadway in downtown L.A., Ms. Smith will point out the 12 historic movie theatres that were built between 1910 and 1931, when the district had the highest concentration of cinemas in the world. In the 1930s, this was the hub of L.A.’s entertainment scene, a place where, according to the Los Angeles Times, “Screen goddesses and guys in fedoras rubbed elbows with army nurses and aircraft pioneers."

    • The Bradbury Building: A Unique Treasure

Built in 1893, the Bradbury Building is the oldest commercial building in downtown Los Angeles and one of the city’s unique treasures. • A 21st-Century Cathedral

What historically took centuries to construct was accomplished in three years in the building of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, which opened in 2002. Grand Park extends down from Grand Avenue via a series of stairs, ramps and sloped walks as well as an elevator, to invite more pedestrians into this vibrant garden environment, a place to come together in a welcoming and distinctly urban oasis.

    • 8Hollyhock House

Aline Barnsdall's family built an empire from their endeavours in the oil industry, which allowed her the luxury of commissioning Frank Lloyd Wright to design this marvellous construction. The house embodies the recurring theme of Mayan Revivalism found in many of Wright's other projects – known for using large stones, introverted windows, courtyards, and ornately designed accompaniments. Water once flowed from a pool in the courtyard through an underground tunnel to an inside moat, and out again to a fountain. The Hollyhock plant is a repeating motif of the architecture and is used in many of the details around the property.

Climb aboard a helicopter for a picturesque journey of Malibu's iconic beachfront homes and majestic shoreline. The ride offers a bird’s-eye view of downtown Los Angeles before heading northwest to Malibu Canyon.

At the Malibu Family Wines Estate, enjoy a private tasting of their award-winning Semmler and Saddlerock wines, followed by a gourmet picnic lunch prepared by Peninsula chefs and served under the oak trees by a Peninsula Page. You can even feed apples and carrots to the estate’s collection of horses, zebras and buffalo after lunch. On the ride back, the helicopter sweeps over the Pacific coastline, offering magnificent views – and perhaps even a glimpse of The Peninsula Beverly Hills.
